Ehrenfelser |
A hybrid born from the Vinifera vines of
Sylvaner and Riesling. Extremely frost
resistant, the Ehrenfelser was created to
provide Riesling quality in colder climates.
Success was close, but the Ehrenfelser suffers
from very low natural acidity, thus it is best
consumed young and has not potential for
long-term aging. Found in the German regions of
Pfalz and Rheinhessen, though it is most
prominent in Canada. Ehrenfelsers have aromas
and flavors reminiscent of apples, pears and
white flowers.

Emerald Riesling |
A hybrid created at UC Davis, the original
intent being to create a grape that was both
high in quality and high in productivity. The
Emerald Riesling is a cross between Moscadelle
and Riesling. Wines made from this grape were
most popular in the 1960s and 1970s though it is
very rare today. Ironically, the Emerald
Riesling grows best on the coast of California
instead of the hot inland counties that it was
created for. It is also grown in South Africa
with both limited quanities and success. |

Encruzado |
A slightly obscure white wine grape from the Dão
region of northern Portugal. Though not a
productive varietal the wines can be quite
fragrant with flavors and aromas of apricots,
nectarines and golden raisins. Poor versions can
be plagued by low acidity, but most wines have
acceptable balance. |

Ermitage |
The synonym used in Switzerland for the Marsanne
Varietal.
